After 60 hours of work, I have finished Pastel Rock Meditation.
I saw these rocks when I was walking through the Sorrento Valley hiking trail and noticed the range of subtle color changes in the rocks, that there was a rock of every color. I was instantly inspired and I wanted to paint them big.
Compositionally the flat repetitious nature of the rocks is reminiscent of my previous shallow depth of field paintings.
This painting is made up of dozens of splatter layers of color created by thinning the oil paint with turpentine and lit seed oil. I embraced the splatters because they reminded me of the porous nature of rocks.
